On My Mind: The Appeal of the Sensible Shoe

Lately, I’ve been noticing sensible shoes.
Not sneakers or ironically ugly shoes that have already become fashionable, but the kind of shoes that might otherwise go unnoticed. A simple loafer, a low heel, a flat that looks almost too practical to be interesting. Then I saw a pair styled with a romantic, flowy dress and suddenly, the sensible shoe was the thing that made the whole look interesting.
It got me thinking about all the things we might dismiss on their own, like a practical handbag, slightly dated art, or a purely functional fan that once placed in the right context, become something different. Maybe when everything is trying so hard to be interesting, the thing that isn’t can be a relief. That became the idea for this edit.
The Psychology Behind It
There’s a psychological concept called habituation, and it’s the tendency for our response to something to diminish the more we’re exposed to it. What once caught our attention can eventually start to fade into the background simply because we’ve seen it so many times.
A similar thing can happen aesthetically. When we’re repeatedly exposed to the same highly styled interiors, trending silhouettes, or versions of what’s considered “good taste”, even beautiful things can begin to feel predictable.
That may be part of the appeal of the sensible shoe. Paired with a romantic dress, it interrupts what we expect to see. The same can happen with a slightly dated painting in an otherwise interesting room or a practical bag paired with something more expressive. Sometimes, the thing that feels fresh isn’t what’s new but the thing we weren’t expecting.
The Collection
Some of these pieces may not look particularly remarkable on their own, and that’s partly the point. Their appeal isn’t necessarily contained in the object itself, but in what happens when it’s placed alongside something unexpected.

On its own, there may be nothing particularly daring about this shoe, and that’s part of why I like it. Paired with something romantic, oversized, or unexpected, its practicality can make the entire look more interesting.

There’s nothing particularly decorative about this fan. It’s basic, inexpensive and designed to do its job— keep you cool. But maybe that’s part of the appeal. In a thoughtfully designed room, something purely functional can feel unexpectedly interesting. Not everything in a space has to be elevated to somehow work.

A Closer Look
There’s a difference between choosing something because it’s fashionable and choosing it because you see something in it. Maybe that’s part of what makes these objects appealing. They require a little imagination.
The sensible shoe doesn’t scream “cool”. And the old painting doesn’t arrive already styled into the perfect room. Their appeal can come from what we do with them, what we put beside them, how we wear them, and the context we give them. And perhaps after seeing so much designed to immediately capture our attention, there’s pleasure in discovering something familiar that feels different.

Choose something because you see something in it, not because it’s trending.
